Anyone who has tried to monitor VMware virtualization using the existing Nagios plugins available will have experienced one thing: your Nagios host becomes unresponsive as you monitor more and more objects. This has to do with the VMware SDK; it’s CPU- and memory-hungry. The box293_check_vmware plugin is a new plugin that has been written from the ground up to overcome this issue. This plugin is NOT designed to be run on your Nagios host. Instead, it is offloaded to the VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA). This presentation will demonstrate the capabilities of the plugin, along with how to get it up and running.

The biggest challenge in monitoring is often that the tools available on the market are either too expensive or do not have the capabilities you need or expect. Tecnoquimicas has a farm of servers running various software and hardware configurations in different geographical areas and with different services that are relevant for each specific location. We were able to migrate from tools such as HP OpenView and Microsoft System Center, which covered only part of what we wanted to monitor, to Nagios, which provided the scope and capabilities we needed. This presentation will cover how we met this enormous challenge at a low cost and with complex requirements, creating a custom monitoring environment tailored to each service and application while providing monitoring consoles to different areas of the company. We will share our experience and tips as we explain how we solved these challenges.

This talk will cover how to integrate various Nagios solutions with each other as well as third-party security applications to identify security issues for workstations and servers (mostly Windows). We will cover the following in this presentation:

  • How to use SNMP traps (NSTI\XI), based on event logs, and anti-virus products to send notifications and automate the identification of malicious activity
  • How to kick off event handlers to both clean and check the infected system and integrate with Nagios Network Analyzer to get a report of network traffic related to the system

Rob Hassing

Rob Hassing is 42 years old and currently lives in the Netherlands. Rob is a 15-year veteran of Linux/OSS, is a Red Hat Certified Engineer, and is currently using Linux in a professional setting. Rob started using Nagios back in 2005, and his current implementation includes 25 Nagios servers. Rob has also developed a number of appliances and open-source tools. In his free time, he likes to take his Citroen 2CV to car shows and drive it around town.

We have about 25 engineers using the Nagios servers located at our customers’ premises, and the servers are not allowed to connect back to our office, so there is no central user database. We have a very large distributed Nagios deployment that monitors everything from mission-critical business services to applications, physical and virtual infrastructure, mainframe alerts, branch servers, and everything in between. Highly visible, traffic-light-style Nagios/NagVis dashboards are prominently displayed in our global NOC to provide high-level availability status information for major services, applications, and systems. Many operations and application support teams depend on Nagios and the detailed NagVis dashboards. Nagios provides alerts via SMS and email and is integrated into the remedy service desk to provide auto-ticketing where appropriate. Eight years ago, Nagios took the place of one of the Big Four vendor’s proprietary tools to provide our monitoring environment. In six months of monitoring with Nagios, we had achieved deeper and more comprehensive monitoring coverage than during the previous eight years of Big Four monitoring. This presentation will include many actual screenshots and specific details of how we managed to overcome some of the challenges in our environment, specifically the Remedy Service Desk integration and monitoring mainframe applications.

Nagios plugins and active checks are great, but there are limits. In big installations with only a few Nagios servers available, performance has to be taken into consideration. In our organization, having experienced problems with over 2,000 checks per minute, we decided to switch to passive checks. As for the alerts, we decided not to maintain thresholds on each and every server and instead modify the Nagios Core code. We developed a new way of creating Nagios alerts. The idea was simple: send only metrics from all servers and set up thresholds on the Nagios side. We presented a pseudo-agent with a bunch of plugins to gather data on the servers and transfer it to the Nagios servers. Now, monitoring over 10,000 services per minute on a Nagios server isn’t an issue. Our installation counts over 39k services on Windows/Linux servers, with less than 10 Nagios 3.X servers on the board, and is still on the increase.

There are many things in the physical world you might want to monitor: room temperature, opened doors, motion, etc. While some solutions exist, they are generally either standalone closed-source systems or they are limited in scope and extensibility. Arduino systems allow you to build your own solution that is customized to your needs while maintaining complete control over the hardware and software, all at a fraction of the cost of other solutions. In this talk, I will show a few examples of passive physical environment monitoring reported to Nagios.

The electrical sector has received significant improvements in EMS and SCADA systems throughout the last few years. Although legacy systems are still present in substation automation, the state of the art is the utilization of Ethernet-based solutions. With the reduction of hard-wired-based communications, the difficulty of identifying failed devices has grown exponentially. This is especially important in field monitoring and control. Besides, SCADA systems still lack the flexibility to monitor all the devices in the supervisory and control systems. Nagios has been filling this gap at CEEE-GT due to its configuration flexibility. It has been used for monitoring real-time and historical power system servers (RAID disks, MySQL services, Ethernet interfaces, server load, etc.), substation UTRs and HMIs, terminal servers (used for legacy RS-232 communications), GPS devices, external network links, and other systems used in the operations centers and substations. The use of Nagios has improved the quality of failure information and automated system monitoring via email notifications. Nagios use can be expanded for monitoring protection and control systems inside the substation, taking advantage of standardized protocols like IEC 61850, which propose the expansion of Ethernet-based solutions to field devices.

Konstantin Benz is a researcher at the ICCLab, a research lab at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), which focuses on cloud computing. His main research interests are monitoring and the high availability of cloud computing infrastructures. In 2008, Konstantin started his professional career in IT service management at IBM, where he worked on several projects focused on re-engineering and further development of IBM’s internal infrastructure. In 2011, he moved to ZHAW to follow a Master’s program in service engineering. While pursuing his Master’s studies, he works as research staff in ICCLab and is responsible for monitoring and high availability of ZHAW’s OpenStack cluster within the EU-funded XiFi project. Konstantin has experience in monitoring environments since 2008, when he started working with IBM’s Tivoli Monitoring tool set. He became interested in customizing monitoring tools and experimenting with different solutions. Since IBM is working with open-source alternatives and contributing to the open-source community, Konstantin discovered Nagios monitoring software, which is an extremely flexible and powerful alternative to commercial solutions. During his work with IT infrastructures, he experienced the IT industry’s paradigm shift towards cloud computing, where IBM played a pioneering role. After his move to ZHAW in 2011, Konstantin became involved in the deployment of OpenStack clusters. Now, he investigates monitoring and high-availability tools for OpenStack.

In this talk, we will explore the relationship between OpenStack’s native monitoring system, Ceilometer, and Nagios. Ceilometer is an integral component of OpenStack and, as such, can easily collect much information about an OpenStack deployment; however, it is still under development and is not as feature-rich as the Nagios ecosystem. Consequently, there is a place for both in monitoring an OpenStack deployment. The talk will first outline the parameters that are typically interesting to monitor in an OpenStack deployment. This will be followed by an analysis of how such monitoring can be done using Ceilometer and Nagios and where there are gaps between the requirements and the capabilities of these tools. Then we will describe how we incorporate Ceilometer data into our Nagios configuration. We will motivate the use case and the design decisions chosen and explain why importing Ceilometer data into Nagios can be very useful in an OpenStack context. Then we will go into detail on the open-source Nagios plugin we have developed to enable quite sophisticated Ceilometer data import into Nagios. We will discuss challenges related to the Nagios/Ceilometer integration, including the growing data load in Ceilometer, which causes the Ceilometer API to become unusable, resulting in a service connection timeout in Nagios. We will show some solutions to this problem: employing cronjobs, enabling data warehousing, or using a round-robin database. We will also discuss the advantages of Nagios in terms of extensibility and flexibility.

In the past, the management of Nagios in my organization has been left up to a single team: application support. Application Support handled Nagios for nine different agile product teams; our product teams moved so quickly between iterations that sometimes Application Support would not get notified of changes made during those iterations and therefore would not update Nagios with those changes. The feedback from developers was mostly the same: developers would put off making changes because it wasn’t something they managed, and they didn’t have a full understanding of Nagios. During one of my skip-level management meetings, I was talking with my boss’s boss about improving the monitoring infrastructure and was asked for a solution to the developers’ complaints. I originally thought about throwing everything into GitHub and letting everyone start writing their own configs there, but it would require some system knowledge that all of our developers might not have. Dealing with Nagios Core on the CLI level isn’t for the faint of heart when monitoring over five hundred systems and thousands of services, especially keeping templates, contacts, time periods, and other things organized. In came a demo copy of Nagios XI, which I showed off to my boss and the certification product team (one of our most important teams). The certification team picked up on it right away and started learning it and giving positive feedback on their experiences. After a little over a full month of testing, we decided to purchase the Nagios XI Enterprise license and start migrating everything to it. Nagios XI sheds the complexity of requiring advanced CLI and system knowledge, empowering the product teams to take ownership of their own checks. My presentation will cover how we have turned over control of Nagios to our developers, the learning pains we experienced during this phase, and the solutions to handle them.

For me, one of the biggest advantages of Nagios is its flexibility and ease with which you can create custom plugins and scripts to check on things. I’ve found this extremely useful when monitoring variables that previously were monitored using technicians, which is slow and loses a lot of the actual events. In a cable company, a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) serves Internet connections to a large geographic area. This area is covered by nodes that are implemented with less than 300 clients. Each node defines a specific sector of the geographic area that the CMTS covers. A node is often connected directly to one of the radio frequency interfaces of the CMTS. It is possible to obtain a lot of variables from a radio frequency interface that help identify an issue and treat it correctly to solve it and minimize the impact it has on the clients. Commonly, this is done using a technician who can log into the CMTS and obtain information when clients call the call center and report an issue. My goal was to be proactive, and to understand the logic behind issue detection, and then to code that into plugins so that technicians are no longer looking for and classifying events but actually solving them. I managed to execute everything automatically there was to automate, leaving humans only with human-like work. Using Nagios, I could write custom scripts that find disconnection time patterns in specific geographic locations and report a match as an issue. The issue is then processed depending on different data, like the signal quality of the clients in the area, the power feed to the different devices present in the area, DOCSIS correctable and uncorrectable errors, and other variables that help identify the type of event. Thanks to Nagios and the custom system I’ve built, the data is abstracted, so the technicians from the network operation center are no longer looking at online or offline interfaces. They look for actual issues that occur in our network and relate to a lot of clients. Issues are qualified according to issue type, clients affected, and time so that technicians can solve the issue that matters the most first. Visual aids are also developed to find patterns within time and zone, so further statistics, reports, and decisions can be made to reduce future events.

At Ubuntu, we’ve recognized that as you get bigger, the need to manage things at the service level on top of the machine level is becoming more important. We’ve developed a service orchestration tool called Juju to help people with this. You can now deploy Nagios as easily in your cloud as you can install a package on a local machine, connect it to services you want to monitor, and spend more time using the tools instead of configuring them to work.
